REFLECTION OF Weeks 1-7

In week 1, I wrote my “Personal Theory of Learning” and I most definitely wrote it without the vast amount of knowledge that I now have as a result of taking this course.  My theory was based on a teacher-centered classroom and as I reread it, I felt somewhat ashamed.  I saw myself as a really good teacher as I constantly created new ways to make the classroom fun with the use of games, and flash cards, and competitions.  Although these strategies are useful in my classroom, and promote a fun learning environment, it lacks technology and it lacks  the Constructivist Theory that Dr. Orey constantly promoted in the videos.  Consequently, my strategies keep me front and center most times, and doesn’t allow my students to create. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011). 

In this course, I fully comprehend the difference between a technology tool where the teacher simply presents information, and a Learning tool where the teacher promotes learning with the use of technology in a student centered classroom verses a teacher centered classroom (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).  Consequently, I will adjust my instructional practice by integrating technology into my lesson plan wherever possible in an effort to make students more responsible for their own learning, and to make learning exciting and rewarding for them with the use of technology.

Until recently, my students were not utilizing any of the resources that Dr. Orey, Dr. Pikering, and the other presenters mentioned, and they are not necessarily creating any artifacts (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).   The reason is that I had never heard of many of the resources that are available to me before taking this class. I am excited to be able to take what I have learned back into the classroom, and watch my students utilize such resources as FAKEBOOK, VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS, and my favorite, VOICETHREAD.  These tools will enhance my student’s learning as they take full responsibility for their learning experience.  By working collaboratively, as mentioned in the videos, students will get a sense of working as a team to accomplish a common goal.  Group collaboration during learning, also takes me, the teacher, away from the front of the classroom, and allows me to mix and mingle as I support my student’s efforts.  I am excited to utilize the instructional skills and technological resources that I have gained in this course.

The first long-term goal changes that I plan to make to my instructional practice regarding the integration of technology is to place myself in a position to share what I have learned with my colleagues and other teachers in the Northern Virginia area.  Taking this class has been a blessing, as I see advantages developing in the work place.  My workplace is undergoing a huge transition in an attempt to receive a new certification.  Ironically, the integration of technology into the curriculum has become a top priority.  I have been nominated the “Chairmen” of a new committee called The Technology Committee.   I have been nominated as the person to receive additional training in order to teach my colleagues what I am actually learning in this course. 

The second Long-term goal change that I have already implemented in my instructional practice is the implementation of technology in most or of (or all of) my lesson plans.  I plan to go through each link that I have seen during this course and the last one, and compile them in a spreadsheet.  I’ve already started using a resource called DELICIOUS (thank you Professor Arnold), which allows me to keep all of the links that I have recorded in one place.  It is my goal to learn how to use them all so that I am knowledgeable in the use of each one.

My VT addresses the Darkside of Technology (That is also the name of my VT).  Everyone has noticed some of the bad habits that have been developed due to technology or due to the love of technology.  I also address some issues pertaining to students and their lack of knowledge in some areas as a result of certain technology.  Please enjoy.

Connectivism and Social Learning in Practice

This week (5) I learned about Connectivism and Social Learning, whereby all students are responsible for their own learning and work collectively to achieve a common goal.  Dr. Orey speaks of strategies such as the “Jigsaw Strategy” that requires students to conduct research on a particular subject as a group.  Each group of students teaches to a different group something about the subject that they researched.  He states that the best way to learn context is to teach it. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) I agree whole-heartedly with this statement, because in my classroom, I find that a student learns vocabulary even better when he is standing in front of the class showing the index cards to his peers as if he were the teacher. 

Dr. Michael Orey speaks of creating social networks for learning within the classroom.  Using Cooperative Learning is a great tool to use in the classroom, because it allows students to work together and formulate ideas as a unit (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) .

George Siemans speaks of a new theory called Connectivism.  This theory  focuses on forming networks and navigating networks of knowledge amongst learners. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) Both presenters instructional strategies described in the resources were extremely helpful, and they related well to the principles of social learning theories. Common Craft, for example, explained a resource called Flickr that gives learners the ability to log photos of a field trip online, tag each photo, and tell a story about their experience on that field trip. With this resource, students could work in pairs or teams to relive a field trip and then retell portions of the trip to their peers.  Dr. Orey’s “Jigsaw Strategy” would be perfect in this instance. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008)

Another resource that I found interesting was called “Splainer.”  It is a resource that would be great for teaching students to create a mock business and explain it in an online presentation.  The themes that are offered would make the activity fun.  Cooperative learning could be used in both these instances, allowing students to work together, bounce ideas off of one another, discuss issues as they achieve group learning. (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008)

        I found the resources presented to be extremely helpful, and I cannot wait to implement them in my classroom.   The resources that are available are plentiful, to say the least, and we educators must find them and use them whenever necessary.

There are many reasons that teachers should engage students in a different kind of learning experience that promotes a more engaging learning environment.  In this week’s resources, Dr. Orey  presented  two theories which positively help to make .  They are the Constructionist and Constructivist theory.  Both theories allow the students to construct their own knowledge and understanding of things.   When a teacher implements the theory of Constructivism, he/she  is allowing students the opportunity to construct in their own minds a hypothesis which is unique to the student. Constructionism, on the other hand, promotes the students ability to build an external artifact or something that the student can share with others.  It allows the student to get involved first hand in building something.     (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).    

In the Reading, Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, the recommendation on page 204 states that teachers should “engage students in a variety of structured tasks for generating and testing hypotheses,” and “ask students to explain their hypotheses or predictions and their conclusions.” Pitler, Hubbel, and Huhn offer a multitude of resources to assist teachers in making the learning experience for students more interactive and thought provoking.  Sites such as Kidspiration and Inspiration offer templates to help organize higher-level cognitive tasks.  Other sites offered are Windward, which is an interactive game that helps students learn about weather and wind patterns, and Hurrican Strike, which is a simulation from the university Corporation for Atmospheric Research.  There are too many resources to mention, but each one makes for a gratifying lesson for the student and the teacher. Such resources allow students to think in ways that are unique to today’s classroom environment.     (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).

How Instructional Strategies Correlate with the Principles of the Cognitive Learning Theory

Cognitive learning is a 3 stage model, says Dr. Orey, and those three stages are receipt of information, which is stored in short-term memory, and is then stored into Long term memory.  It is my understanding that, because there is a limit to how much information a learner can absorb at one time (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) it is imperative that as a teacher I am always cognizant of how the information is presented to my students.  Dr. Orey explains that Long-term memory is broken down into three phases.  They are Declarative, which includes the facts that a learner retains.  Procedural, which pertains to the instructions on how to do things that the learner would retain.  Finally, Episodic  Memory would be the retention of information pertaining to events.  Dr. Orey, also presented the Dual Coding Theory, which is when a person connects an image with a word and remembers that word forever, because of that image.  Dr. Orey stated that people store images in their memory easier.

 Another theory mentioned is the Elaboration Theory, which is considered the main mechanism for storing information.  This is when you connect additional memories to whatever it is that you need to remember, and this process helps the learner to learn easier.    Dr. Orey states that from a cognitive perspective, application of these theories in the academic arena are extremely important.

These theories set the foundation for the instructional strategies presented in the resources.   Giving Cues to students,  is the same as giving them a peek into what they will be learning. It is always important to set the stage for the learner, so that he/she is anticipating what is to come. Asking questions, and using Advanced Organizers are used to help in the enhancement of a learner’s ability to retrieve, use, and organize information about a subject matter (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001). This relates to Dr. Orey’s explanation of the application of the theories, and of being mindful that the information presented must be done so methodically since the learner is simply not able to absorb too much information at once.  (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008)

Using Concept Mapping and Virtual Field Trips tools is connected to the Elaboration Cognitive Theory, which is when the learner is able to connect additional information to a subject to help with memory.  With Concept Mapping, the central node would be the main idea or topic of point of understanding, while the other connected modules allow the learner to take in the information piecemeal.  Dual Coding also plays a part in the Concept Mapping, because these tools offer additional images of which the learner can use to relate to something connected to that image such as a person, place, or another word.

Virtual Field Trips relate to Dr. Orey’s explanation of Episodic Memory, because a field trip (Virtual or Real) is definitely an event that entails visiting a location that is unfamiliar to the learner.  Virtual field trips, like the one presented of the Ford Theatre in the video (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) are exciting, especially if the teacher presents the information well.  Even I was enthralled with watching the very booth that President Lincoln once sat in.  Because the event took place in Washington, DC (40 minutes from my home) I was thrilled to be able to witness that particular virtual trip.  I can only imagine how exciting that was for each of the students watching it. 

I intend to use the instructional strategies more often in my classes, because not only will implementing them make learning more exciting for my students, but it also gives me a solid platform from which to teach.   My students would benefit from a summary at the end of each lesson.  Although I always attempt to do this in my classroom, I am always cognizant of teaching from bell to bell as instructed by the Principal.  Therefore, I have sometimes been negligent in always summarizing at the end of each lesson.  Using these Instructional Strategies will keep me on track.  Also, I really like the idea of students taking notes, and I do intend to make sure that this is happening at the end of each class.    Taking notes reinforces what the students learned, and definitely helps learners retain more information. 

I will definitely be using all of the Instructional Strategies presented in this course, because there is a wealth of information waiting to be shared with young minds.  I am also excited to share tools such as virtual field trips with my co-workers who are always looking for ways to enhance learning for their students.
