There are many reasons that teachers should engage students in a different kind of learning experience that promotes a more engaging learning environment.  In this week’s resources, Dr. Orey  presented  two theories which positively help to make .  They are the Constructionist and Constructivist theory.  Both theories allow the students to construct their own knowledge and understanding of things.   When a teacher implements the theory of Constructivism, he/she  is allowing students the opportunity to construct in their own minds a hypothesis which is unique to the student. Constructionism, on the other hand, promotes the students ability to build an external artifact or something that the student can share with others.  It allows the student to get involved first hand in building something.     (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).    

In the Reading, Using Technology with Classroom Instruction that Works, the recommendation on page 204 states that teachers should “engage students in a variety of structured tasks for generating and testing hypotheses,” and “ask students to explain their hypotheses or predictions and their conclusions.” Pitler, Hubbel, and Huhn offer a multitude of resources to assist teachers in making the learning experience for students more interactive and thought provoking.  Sites such as Kidspiration and Inspiration offer templates to help organize higher-level cognitive tasks.  Other sites offered are Windward, which is an interactive game that helps students learn about weather and wind patterns, and Hurrican Strike, which is a simulation from the university Corporation for Atmospheric Research.  There are too many resources to mention, but each one makes for a gratifying lesson for the student and the teacher. Such resources allow students to think in ways that are unique to today’s classroom environment.     (Laureate Education, Inc., 2011).

How Instructional Strategies Correlate with the Principles of the Cognitive Learning Theory

Cognitive learning is a 3 stage model, says Dr. Orey, and those three stages are receipt of information, which is stored in short-term memory, and is then stored into Long term memory.  It is my understanding that, because there is a limit to how much information a learner can absorb at one time (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) it is imperative that as a teacher I am always cognizant of how the information is presented to my students.  Dr. Orey explains that Long-term memory is broken down into three phases.  They are Declarative, which includes the facts that a learner retains.  Procedural, which pertains to the instructions on how to do things that the learner would retain.  Finally, Episodic  Memory would be the retention of information pertaining to events.  Dr. Orey, also presented the Dual Coding Theory, which is when a person connects an image with a word and remembers that word forever, because of that image.  Dr. Orey stated that people store images in their memory easier.

 Another theory mentioned is the Elaboration Theory, which is considered the main mechanism for storing information.  This is when you connect additional memories to whatever it is that you need to remember, and this process helps the learner to learn easier.    Dr. Orey states that from a cognitive perspective, application of these theories in the academic arena are extremely important.

These theories set the foundation for the instructional strategies presented in the resources.   Giving Cues to students,  is the same as giving them a peek into what they will be learning. It is always important to set the stage for the learner, so that he/she is anticipating what is to come. Asking questions, and using Advanced Organizers are used to help in the enhancement of a learner’s ability to retrieve, use, and organize information about a subject matter (Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock, 2001). This relates to Dr. Orey’s explanation of the application of the theories, and of being mindful that the information presented must be done so methodically since the learner is simply not able to absorb too much information at once.  (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008)

Using Concept Mapping and Virtual Field Trips tools is connected to the Elaboration Cognitive Theory, which is when the learner is able to connect additional information to a subject to help with memory.  With Concept Mapping, the central node would be the main idea or topic of point of understanding, while the other connected modules allow the learner to take in the information piecemeal.  Dual Coding also plays a part in the Concept Mapping, because these tools offer additional images of which the learner can use to relate to something connected to that image such as a person, place, or another word.

Virtual Field Trips relate to Dr. Orey’s explanation of Episodic Memory, because a field trip (Virtual or Real) is definitely an event that entails visiting a location that is unfamiliar to the learner.  Virtual field trips, like the one presented of the Ford Theatre in the video (Laureate Education, Inc., 2008) are exciting, especially if the teacher presents the information well.  Even I was enthralled with watching the very booth that President Lincoln once sat in.  Because the event took place in Washington, DC (40 minutes from my home) I was thrilled to be able to witness that particular virtual trip.  I can only imagine how exciting that was for each of the students watching it. 

I intend to use the instructional strategies more often in my classes, because not only will implementing them make learning more exciting for my students, but it also gives me a solid platform from which to teach.   My students would benefit from a summary at the end of each lesson.  Although I always attempt to do this in my classroom, I am always cognizant of teaching from bell to bell as instructed by the Principal.  Therefore, I have sometimes been negligent in always summarizing at the end of each lesson.  Using these Instructional Strategies will keep me on track.  Also, I really like the idea of students taking notes, and I do intend to make sure that this is happening at the end of each class.    Taking notes reinforces what the students learned, and definitely helps learners retain more information. 

I will definitely be using all of the Instructional Strategies presented in this course, because there is a wealth of information waiting to be shared with young minds.  I am also excited to share tools such as virtual field trips with my co-workers who are always looking for ways to enhance learning for their students.

WEEK II POST

Dr. Michael Orey discussed in this week's video that many believe that the Behaviorist Theory is defunct, and is no longer being used in schools.  Orey defies that notion by first explaining in detail the Behaviorist theory by first dismissing the notion that the Term Behaviorism relates to bad behavior. He explains that BF Skinner first introduced Behaviorism and that it revolves around Operant Conditioning, which has two mechanisms:  Reinforcement and Punishment.

The word "Punishment" always seems to be a negative term; one that my school avoids at all costs.  It seems too harsh of a term to use when discussing school and students' behaviors, but Dr. Orey explains the negativity away by stating that "Reinforcement" is what teachers use to get their students to perform a certain task or behavior consistently, while "Punishment" is only implemented when a behavior needs to be eliminated.  It is only used to introduce consequences that stop the behavior, states Dr. Orey.

Although Dr. Orey's explanation does take away from the harshness of the word, I personally feel that another term should be used here, such as "Behavior Modification," since "Punishment" still seems harsh.  I am sure that many parents cringe at the use of the term being used in schools to refer to an action taken to get their children to change a behavior.

Orey also mentions the various types of Operant Conditioning, one of which is called PROGRAMED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY. Basically, this type of strategy, is used to ask the learner a question, and requires an answer, and allows the learner to move on to the next question only if the previous answer is correct.  This strategy reinforces learning as the learner works to strengthen weaknesses.

Another form of Operant Conditioning used in the classroom for behaviorism is the visual behavior contract where the student is required to move the magnet or clip down to an identified bad behavior consequence. The student isn't necessarily being "scolded or punished," but redirected or reminded that there is always a consequence for any inappropriate behavior.  This contract agreement between the teacher and the student is another learning moment for the student that will, hopefully, help the student to modify that behavior.

Dr. Orey mentions that Operant Conditioning is also used in negative ways, especially with the advent of No Child Left Behind where the technology is not used to enrich the majority of the students, but is catered to only a select few who have been identified as needing remediation.   In this case, states Dr. Orey, the technology is used to focus on poor achievers only, while the others are left out of the equation.

The Instructional strategies described by Dr. Orey correlate with the principles of behaviourist orientation to learning theories mentioned in the article, The Behaviourist Orientation To Learning, behaviours or responses are strengthened or weakened by consequences of that behavior.  The article stated that Skinner's goal was to reinforce what you want people to do and ignore or punish what you want people to stop doing.  I believe that this strategy is most effective, because i t allows the instructor to manage behavior in a positive and very constructive manner.

According to James Hartley,  four key principles are important in maintaing the behaviourist theory  in the classroom.  They are ACTIVITY, REPETITION, REINFORCEMENT, CLEAR OBJECTIVES. The latter correlates with what Dr. Orey mentioned regarding the behavior contract between the student and the teacher.  Dr. Orey mentioned that it is very important that the student clearly understands the objectives that the teacher presents so that there is no misunderstanding as to why the student is being asked to modify a particular behavior.  The article (INFED) mentions that learning is better when the learner is active rather than passive, which correlates with Dr. Orey's statement regarding the misuse of technology for remedial purposes.  The fact that students sit for a period of time working on "dry tutorials," is not a good use of time or an effective use of technology.

The instructional strategies described in the resources correlate significantly well with the principles of behaviorist Learning Theory. In fact, without one, the other would not be effective.

WEEK 1 - Using Technology with Classroom Instruction

In the reading for week 1, it was made clear that using the Behaviorist theory by reinforcing effort and providing recognition is an essential tool for motivating students to be active learners in the classroom. The quote mentioned in Chapter 2, "Success comes in cans; failure in cant's," brings home this theory. 

In my classroom, I have always practiced the Behaviorist theory, and could see a major difference in my classroom activity vs the classrooms where this theory is not being utilized.  While other students tarry in the hallway waiting for the last moment to go into their classroom, my students hustle to get into my class.  Why?  Because I stand at the door with tickets in my hand that each student who arrives on time receives.  Those who arrive late, do not receive a ticket.  Punishment?  Not at all.  It is the consequence for not making the effort to arrive on time. 

Once the attendance is taken, I am prepared to reward my students once again, with another ticket.  This time for turning in their HW assignments.  Each student who has completed the HW receives a ticket, and a greater chance to win the raffle prize at the end of class.

All students who ask legitimate questions pertaining to the subject receives another ticket.   It is exciting to look back at a classroom filled with students who were anxious to arrive, be seated, start the day off strong.  Near the end of the class, students are asking to see their number of points received for completing all assignments.  Each student is in a race to get the most points so as to win the prize waiting for them at the end of the month.

Although this sounds like a lot to promise the students, through experience I can tell you that it really does work.  The positive reinforcement keeps the efforts of the students in full gear.  The recognition drives the students to success.

One of the recommendations noted on page 58 caught my eye.  "Ask students to keep track of their effort and achievement," is something that I will consider doing.  Usually, I keep track of the student's achievement with a visual chart that is posted on the wall.  Each students receives either a star or a sticker and can clearly see their progress as well as the progress of others.  Having the students keep track of their own effort and achievement, however, by using the Effort and Achievement Spreadsheet in figure 2.2 is worth trying.

Hello Classmates

I am still trudging my way through this new technology that I've discovered in last semester's class.  Looking forward to the day when using technology is second nature to me. 

I am excited to be going into my second class, with a new instructor.  Welcome back former classmates.  It will be an exciting journey.

I am in the process of finishing up two books, and I am the founder of an organization called College Prep Consulting, which allows me to prepare students for the leap from high school to college. I work full time and I have three really cute grandchildren that I spend most of my weekends with.  My plate is often really full as I am pulled in this direction and that.  That said, please know that when I am slow at responding to your posts, comments, and/or emails, I am not ignoring you or slacking off.  I am simply trying to keep up with myself.
